(Uranium based) Nuclear is DEAD!

I froze when I discovered this.  There is a safe, reliable, relatively clean form of nuclear energy.  Thorium reactors.  Apparently the world has plenty of thorium.

There's one problem with thorium, at least according to some people.  You can't annihilate whole countries with it.

Yep, right around ww2 they were talking about nuclear power.  Thorium ( Read more... )

The other reason we didn't develop thorium reactors is that there were engineering problems with feeding the reaction with a neutron source for them, a problem that a uranium reactor doesn't have. There was serious work done on that in the 1950s, though yes, that other application of uranium reactors won them more attention. But it is surely madness that we aren't working on the problem full tilt now.

Many policies on many subjects remind me of a classic parent/child interaction;

Kid; "Its a disaster! I can't find my favorite toy"
Parent; "Why don't you clean your room and keep it clean, you'll find your toy, and don't have to lose it again."
Kid; "I don't wanna!
Parent; ......
Kid eventually cleans room, narrowly averting catastrophe, and finds toy.
Nuclear, our swimming in Nat Gas, which we could run our cars on, various other "problems", we've got the solution, but say we don't because implementing them requires too much will and change. So we put it off until disaster is neigh, then we change and say "wow that was a close one."
Problem is nuclear doesn't allow "do-vers"
