Bah, you and May smell, and as far as I know are the only two people that felt awkward about these two seperate groups. The reason Matt and I left was because I felt miserable from my back mystery which turned out to not be shingles and he was tired. I asked Jessica if she needed a ride home because I didn't know how else she'd get there. Paul and Michelle left because Paul is the vision of awkward and perhaps is the awkwardness you're talking about. Assuming all of this is what you were talking about... now I feel all self centred.
