Day One. Day Eleven.Day Two. Day Twelve.Day Three. Day Thirteen. Day Four. Day Five.Day Six.Day Seven.Day Eight.Day Nine.Day Ten. She knew precisely when she had come into the field of the vid screen, because Eeben had completely stopped what he was saying about some Glacerian restaurant to blink and stare with mild surprise. “Oh. Lieutenant. I didn’t realize you where there, as well.”
“Not for too long,” said Maria, not entirely reassuringly, because she knew that when she left, Eeben would have to go, too, making her absence a little inconsequential. She sat on the arm of the sofa, perching easily with the cat contentedly draping her paws over her shoulder. “Say hi to the captain, Kat.”
Eeben gave the tight sort of smile that was far more familiar to Maria, and Redd shifted a little, her face burning a little brighter than before. “Maria,” she said, soft and trained even with her face lit up in sheepishness, “Captain Rynt was just telling me about a new place coming into Sector Two, right by your place, actually, that might be working checking ou-“
“Glacerian?” Maria cut in, then made a face. She shook her head. “No, thanks. Too bland. Only thing good to come out of that continent foodwise is keiffer. I could peak for years, however, on the quality of its people.”
Eeben’s dull blue Glacerian eyes settled on Maria with unsurprised dubiousness. “Flattery was never one of your strong points, Lieutenant,” he advised with a cautionary tone.
Maria shrugged, settling Katarina down on the couch. The cat threw a disdainful, rejected look back at Maria, but moseyed forward with a stubbornness to climb immediately onto Redd’s lap instead. Automatically, Redd lifted her hands to accommodate the cat, and one hand mechanically fell into petting her in long, patient movements. The purring started again, and she quickly made herself comfortable, trapping Redd for a good portion of the remainder of the evening. Redd never had the heart to just pick up the cat and move her.
“I’m using the washroom before I take off, Redd,” Maria announced as she stood, smoothing out her jeans and brushing a little bit of fur from her shirt. She spared a glance toward the vid screen, and the intense blonde man watching the scene from another part of the Centre. “Guess I’ll probably see you later tonight, Captain?”
In his oversized representation of his office, Eeben gave a stiff nod. “Of course. Good to know for sure you’ve decided to help, Lieutenant.”
But, again, Maria shrugged. “Can’t think of what else I’d be doing anyway,” she said, then brought her heels together as she shot off a proper salute. Her boots jangled slightly, heavy with buckles, and she turned on the thick heels. Her arms dropped for only a seconds, lifting again to run it through her long hair with a sigh as she disappeared into the hallway.
And, finally! The end of that chapter! One of those chapters that make you have to remind yourself fifty gazillion times that you can always edit and cut later, edit and cut later, edit and cut...
I really feel this chapter dragged me down through days when I already didn't have enough time to really write, so it picks up nicely from here again. Plan to do one more day for typing before I stop flooding FLs because I need to tuck in for bed because wahwaaaah, stupid Mondays.
