Spoken Like a Winchester “Okay,” Dean said as he slid the headband with its sparkly halo over Grace’s curls. “You remember what to say when they open the door?”
“Candy!” Grace announced, holding out the pillowcase Bobby had scrounged up for a treat bag.
Dean heard Sam snicker and shot his brother a quick scowl.
“No,” he corrected, “You say, trick or treat.”
Grace looked at him suspiciously, a look he’d received from Makala on more than one occasion, as she mulled the words, and their effectiveness, over in her head.
“Trick or treat,” she repeated slowly, still not sure how that phrase guaranteed candy.
Dean smiled.
“That’s a girl.”
“I still don’t understand this custom,” Castiel announced as he entered the living room, followed by Bobby who carried a large plastic cauldron filled with various sweets. “Celebrating the festival of Samhain does not seem like an appropriate past time for a child of Heaven.”
Dean snorted and rolled his eyes, snatching a jaw breaker from the bowl in Bobby’s hands and receiving a glare for his trouble.
“We’re not celebrating Samhain, Cas,” he explained, popping the candy into his mouth. “We’re celebratin’ free candy.”
Sam shook his head at his brother.
“It’s just something fun for kids to do,” he said and reached for his own handful of sweets as Bobby passed him. The older hunter was ready for it this time and smacked Sam’s hand away before setting the bowl down on the side table by the door.
“Those’re for the kids,” he said. At Sam’s pout Bobby rolled his eyes and relented. “Fine. But I expect more to get out the door than what winds up in your stomachs.”
Ignoring the adults, Grace eyed the bowl silently. Determined to find out how well this ‘trick or treat’ thing worked, she walked up to Bobby and held out the pillow case.
“Trick ‘r treat,” she pronounced solemnly. Sam bit the inside of his cheeks to keep from grinning at the cuteness but Bobby felt no such compunction, smiling brilliantly down at the little girl in her little white dress, a silvery halo over her head and fluffy wings on her back. Dean wasn’t the only one wrapped around Grace’s chubby fingers.
The older hunter scooped up the bucket and went to one knee in front of the girl, letting her pick her own sweets. As she looked over the assortment, head cocked to one side in a familiar gesture, Sam stood and glanced out the window. It was still daylight but this late in the year it got dark quickly.
“If you guys are gonna go before it gets dark you should head out.”
Dean stole another jaw breaker from the bucket and nodded.
“You ready to go, kiddo?”
Grace smiled brightly and nodded.
“Thanks gran’ pa Bobby,” she said and placed a kiss on his cheek.
“Any time, Gracie,” he said, ignoring the smirking Winchesters. “Have fun tonight and keep your Uncle Dean outta trouble. Okay?”
“Kay,” she agreed happily then grabbed Castiel’s hand and began pulling him toward the door. “C’mon, Dee Dee! Candy!”
Dean grabbed his jacket and smirked back at Bobby.
“Always knew you were a marshmallow, Bobby,” he said.
“Just go, ya idjit!” Bobby griped, though he was grinning as the smart-mouthed young man. “It ain’t polite ta keep a lady waitin’!”
Grace grabbed his hand as soon as he was in range and the three soon disappeared through the door.
Author's Note: there will probably be a second part to this but the muse is refusing to put out any more tonight. Also, if anyone has any ideas or wants more backstory for this verse, feel free to let me know. I'll try by best to answer prompts :)
Here be part two...
