I think the concept of one male, one female was always flawed. It was never normal human behavior to desire that.

Diseases weren't understood when that idea was created, so marriage was never about reducing disease. It seems reasonable to think it was to reduce conflict though.

What's happening is that people are loosing interest with old ideals and desiring to express their real emotions about these matters.

Given all the diversity, I'd almost think it was better for the state to just not recognize any marriages. Let people do as they want and organize their relationships as they want. On the other hand though, people *do* want a way to be legally bonded to one another, but with that same diversity, they should have the option of doing that with whoever and however many they want, I think.
