Stereotypically, men who work hard labor wear those shirts since it covers up and it's thin(breathes with air) since it's "unlawful" to work without a shirt on.
When men work hard labor, stereotypically, they don't make a lot of money off of it. People who are stuck in poverty are usually more violent and more prone to alcohol/drugs to relieve their hardship. Violent behavior, alcohol and drugs can all lead to the beating of family members, especially wives.
Just so no one's on my ass about this, the term "wifebeater" for that shirt is HIGHLY, HIGHLY stereotypical.
