Everything around here that wasn’t written in the language of the Ancestors was saved on one of those laptop things and he had no idea how to make them work. He couldn’t ask anyone in case they tried to stop him from completing his task.
Eventually, he’d snuck into his beloved’s room and found a handful of birthday cards. Of course, he couldn’t read the words inside them, but every single one contained the six letters, right at the bottom of the page, sometimes next to some crosses. Those had to be the ones he was looking for.
The next part had been easy. He had more knives in his quarters than he knew what to do with. And pain was a familiar sensation now. There was no question of flinching and ruining the pattern.
It started with a half circle, right at the top of the arm, cutting into the muscle, a faint red line emerging where the blade curved around the skin. The next was a little more difficult. It was like a creature he once saw curled up in the top branches of a tree, a great big ball of fur with a tail sticking out to the side, gripping the branch so that it wouldn’t fall off. Just above the elbow, he carved a man standing on the edge of a pier, arms stretched out in front, ready to dive into the Lantean waters. Below the elbow was a snake, twisted around so that its head faced the opposite direction from the tail. This is followed by a simple circle, the easiest letter yet. It reminds him of the empty hole in his heart where his beloved used to reside. Finally, a small curve, shaped like a hill he might hide behind to ambush the Wraith.
Dropping the knife, he held out his left arm, admiring his new tattoo. Blood dripped from the marks he’d etched into his skin, declaring his undying devotion for the man he’d lost. Salt tears mingled with the streaks of red that spelled out his beloved’s name.
C-a-r-s-o-n
He hoped that his beloved would approve.
