despite multiple [PAINFUL] dental surgeries and a nice dose of pneumonia, i've actually managed to make some headway in some areas of my life that have been a source of stress and a barrier to getting done everything that i need to in order to take back my life the way i need to...it's amazing what almost dying and spending almost a year in ( Read more... )

My antagonism towards the AA model is not something I keep secret. As such, someone pointed out that there are several attempts at adapting the 12 steps to agnostics/humanists/people who don't want to be infantilized. http://www.sossobriety.org/12steps.htm Hope that helps kick start the project a bit :)

o0o0o excellent thank you! i'll see if they present any angles or issues i've overlooked...one of the many issues i have with it is that not only does it draw imaginary lines between what is and what isn't ok to abuse [as apparently it's ok to go to meetings multiple times a day, smoke packs of cigarettes and drink boatloads of coffee so that your entire existence is defined by being in the program and the substance you use chronically and without stopping is legal], but there is no initial harm reduction...what i mean is, before you even get to changing the behaviour that is related to abusing a substance or a manner of behaving, you should really see what immediate harm there is and seek to minimize that harm immediately...for example, if someone has an issue with heroin, before you even get to changing what or when they use etc. you can reduce harm greatly by getting them in touch with a safe injection program, speak to a nurse, see if they need anti-biotics et. al. which can give them a greater sense of control before you even ( ... )

Leslie, your counseling plans are really inspiring! I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get the opportunity to really help some people. I've wrestled a little bit with charity and religion lately. I'm not nearly as eloquent or educated on the subject as you, but I believe it's possible to find help without God. I think that a real, physical shoulder to lean on when you need help is a lot more valuable to people who are struggling than fostering this dependency on what? A fantasy? An ephemeral hope? How is that really constructive ( ... )
