the big, bad infinite

Nietzsche saw this coming first: the democratization of art. If you think about it, it was probably a good thing that the old systems of class were relaxed a bit, to allow for truly great artists to rise from the trampled masses. But shit, as they say, has gotten out of hand. I saw a few bands last night that are the perfect examples of this: driven by a sense of entitlement and personal expression, these fucking lunk-heads bash out ridiculously bad music (and I love good music in all of its forms).

The end result: people become cynical, relativistic, and easily preyed upon by the music industry.

Not even just the record industry. The fact that there is an excess of well, let's call it expressive diaharrea for lack of a better term, leaves individuals confused and in need of guidance. There are many corporations (religious institutions, cults and divisions of the armed forces) just lurking in the wings ready to snatch up these confused, directionless chumps through the manipulation of cultural signifiers and visual stimuli. It's hard even for someone with a well honed analytic faculty to navigate the ocean of crap out there. It takes a lot of patience and tolerance to get somewhere worth going.
