Top Five Most significant Fall Out Boy songs and why. (not necessarily your favorites) From

1. Hum Hallelujah
To me, this song is the most heartbreaking thing. "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley is the one song that will make me cry everytime I hear it. It's one of those things that hits me just right and this song channels that feel when Patrick starts doing the chant. Knowing what the songs means to the band makes it even more significant to me. It's ultimately, about Pete. Writing is good therapy and I'm glad Pete writes when he has those kinds of memories in his head. ...That might be a little fucked up, but whatever. Pill popping has kind of been my flavor lately because I quit smoking pot so a song about ODing on pills hits a little close. Also, well. Scott's the only one who will probably understand it completely.
"So hum hallelujah,
Just off the key of reason
I thought I loved you
It was just how you looked in the light.
A teenage vow in a parking lot
"Till tonight do us part"
I sing the blues and swallow them too."
2. Pretty in Punk
This song is the classic unrequited love story but it's got a certain sweetness to it. Like, it's probably about a snobby scene girl that Pete wanted to date and she didn't want to date him because she was soooo unimpressed by boys in bands. Or, you know, that could just be me. But anyway, I'm a sucker for a love story and they always effect me unless they're super cheesy. And teeny tiny Patrick singing his heart out is way too adorable to be cheesy.
"The only girl who ever gave me the time
was the one who only wanted five minutes of mine
Knocking boots in the back,
How degrading is that?
I decline."
3. Honorable Mention
This is the first Fall Out Boy song I ever heard but I didn't know it at the time. I heard on a friend's mixtape she got from another friend and we had no idea what it was. I didn't even realize until after I heard "Sugar, We're Going Down" and looked into Fall Out Boy a little farther. This song helped me realize how much I loved the genre and made me want to look for more music like it. In a way, this song started by downhill slide into the swirling black hole that is bandslash.
"when the moonlight, hits your bright eyes i go blind
and maybe next time
i'll remember not to tell you something stupid like i'll never leave your side."
4. Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year
I have sung this song (and gotten funny looks for it) while walking around the British Museum in London. Um, yeah. So, I listened to this song on repeat for probably a three month period after I got From Under the Cork Tree. This song summed up...me in high school. I felt all intense all the time and my thoughts were deeper than I wanted them to be. It was a dark dark time in my life and I am so happy that I've learned to embrace my inner nerd (because it's about 90% of what's up there).
"Are we growing up or just going down?
It's just a matter of time until we're all found out
Take our tears, put them on ice
Cause I swear I'd burn this city down to show you the light."
5. The Pros and Cons of Breathing
This song is so angry and nothing (no, seriously, nothing!) makes me happier than an angry song. (Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon got me through high school). This song spoke to me because it was sort of saying everything I was keeping inside. "I want to hate you half as much as I hate myself" summed up years and years of my relationship with my mom. She's emotionally abuse, I get that now, but I didn't when I was younger and everything she said...well, I got angry but mostly I got sad and I really took her words to heart. It still hits me sometimes in my body issues, drug choices, and how I just live my life to be everything she's not. This song is about loving and hating someone so much it makes you hate yourself and that is big in my life.
"I hate the way you say my name like it's something secret
My pen is the barrel of the gun. Remind me which side you should be on."
I feel bad that I don't have any Folie A Deux songs on here but I haven't had the songs long enough to completely dissect them and give them meaning in my life! I guess as an honorary number...
6. Disloyal Order of the Water Buffalo
This is not my favorite song from the new album but I think it speaks volumes about the band's beliefs. It's very sarcastic and pessimistic in the verses but it's angry and truthful and honestly searching in the chorus. It's asking for, not forgiveness, but a second chance because you fucked up and you don't believe in the same things anymore and you feel like no one wants to listen to you. You're not done talking but people aren't interested past the bullshit. I may be looking too far into this but. oh, well.
"I'm a loose bolt of a complete machine
What a match:
I'm half doomed and you're semi-sweet."
Tada. I did it.
