Elle closes her eyes and unconsciously squeezes Gabriel’s hand. It hurts, badly, and she’s definitely starting to think all of this, starting with that first kiss, was a mistake.
A wave of pain flows through her. “I hate you,” she whispers to him, though she’s not sure if she really means it or not.
Then it's finally over and she exhales, slowly, feeling a quiet rush of relief. When Gabriel smiles excitedly at her she suddenly can’t remember why she hates him, and when a nurse hands her a tiny screaming bundle she’s rendered mute, and can’t remember what hurt.
