Sometimes he likes to imagine she’s alive, that someone saved her from that beach. He creates a life for her, something calm, pretty, and always without him.
But he slips, imagines that she finds him and kisses him and it’s like time folds, all moments without her lost in the wrinkles, hemmed and cut away. He knew she would find him, just knew, and when she whispers his name it’s like she never left at all.
Then it’s morning and she’s gone, because it’s best this way, and he laughs because really, who the hell is he trying to convince?
