Well, most of the time, artists tend to retain some of the 'anime/manga' characteristics, for example, the large eyes, which just looks awkward if the rest of the portrait is more realistically drawn or painted. I always found it best to go with your own personal style rather than incorporate certain elements you're really not that familiar with. Just a personal observation and opinion, though :)
