Crock Pot is here!

Well, after several more adventures (one of which nearly resulted in two Rival 6.5 liter crock pots) I now am the proud owner of one, rather large Rival crock pot with a dial for off-low-high and warm. I got mine from a wonderful company on e-bay UK, who were nice enough to cancel the accidental second bid, when they could have held me to it if ( Read more... )

Hmm, maybe I should get one of those. Fond memories from my days of being a college student. Chilli, my bolognese recipie, etc all do well from long cooking. During the winter the woodstove is a good place for those, but in summer something else is needed.

I like to use the solid fuel stove for long term cooking too, but right now we have not had it on running all the time. We just got a new turf shed and are still moving the fuel over. I have used many crock pot recipes on the back of the stove (or on top of the one in the drawing room)though you do have to watch them a bit more because stoves do get really hot sometimes (even in the back corner).

Our climate almost never gets hot enough to really need a crock pot the way you do in Dallas or Denver in the Summer, but we do have many days when even if we used solid fuel heat for all our needs, you wouldn't want to run the stove all the time.

The apple pudding turned out well and I'm about to try some beef and beer so we will see how that goes. That dish does do well on the stove top (in a cast iron pot) but I want to see how "low" the low setting is on the crock pot.

Up here in Sweden woodstoves are good about September-October to April-May. A decent woodstove will stay sort-of even, so if someone is around the kitchen to feed the stove every 30 minutes or so life is good. I prefer not having to light the woodstove in July unless the weather is rotten.

I need to get me a crock pot apparently. I like the idea of food being done when I come home and since I don't have a wood stove, slow cooking food is just not as much fun!
