Can you cunts stop calling us poms? You can't call a black person a nigger, a chinese person a chink but you can effectively call us prisoners (the equivalent would be referring to African-Americans as slave in "jest") and get away with it because it's all in "good humour

My lineage is about 60-40 Scottish-English but since it's all Britain and I grew up in England, I call myself English.

POM is supposed to be derived from 'prisoner of the motherland' (and variations on the same thing). Hence the 'slave' comparisons.

I don't know what poms means and didn't know it was anything to do with prisoners!! I've never used the word myself though, because I simply don't like it. It was good to hear your side of the story, though.

See, my dad is english and has always referred to himself as a pom. I personally dont consider it a derogatory phrase at all, because it is something I have grown up hearing.
I think there is a huge difference between someone saying it in a lighthearted way (for example, when I was younger, my dad used to flex his muscles and say 'see this? this is pommy power!') and someone saying it in an insulting manner.

But just like everyone else, I had no idea what it actually meant until I read your post, so there you go :P
