[At first, there's a long period of extended silence, followed by the somewhat strained voice of Ange.]

How do you know if... you really know someone?

It's hard to say if it's truly possible to know someone. People hide their true selves beneath the surface so all you can do is take their word for things.

Then, it's incredibly easy to be... let down.

Quite a thoughtful question, isn't it?
Spend time with them alone.

But, how much time? Even years... aren't enough.

How do you know that it isn't?

We can only go by with what we know of that person, regardless of whether what we see is who they pretend to be, or who they truly are. It's up to you, whether you're willing or not to give them the benefit of the doubt.

True enough. It's just difficult, to realize that you don't really know someone that you thought you knew well.

[On the inside, Lelouch is smiling at this question. It's probably a question anybody he's ever come into contact with has asked. However, on the outside, his demeanor is calm and collected.]

For some, there's never a way to know if you truly know the individual. The number of secrets one can hide, the number of masks they can wear is infinite. They take careful note of everything they do, wearing a different mask for everybody they're around, telling even the smallest of lies to cover their behavior.

[What an interesting answer. She's intrigued by this guy.]

It certainly makes it difficult to trust people, doesn't it?

Incredibly difficult, but that's just one of the many perils the human race faces on a daily basis. How do you know the politician speaking to an entire country isn't lying to you? How do you know that your friends next to you in class aren't lying to you?

[A smile]

You can't live your life asking questions like that. You would never get anywhere, if that were the case.

I suppose not. But, that doesn't make it any easier to accept.

That kind of thing is pretty hard to tell. For all you know they might just be telling you things and not really mean it.

Yeah, that's what I've gathered.

[Sigh.] How irritating...

Is something wrong, Ange-san?

I... I've been thinking about my life back home. I did everything-... gave everything... to fight to save my family, and my brother, and I'm only realizing now that I really didn't know them at all.
