Who: Near, Mello, and Alice Elliot
Where: Inside the High School
When: The day after Near's arrival; early evening
Rating: PG-13 to be safe (gosh darn Mello <3)
Summary: Near makes his move to leave the high school in search of a more permanent residence, and in doing so, meets Mello.
the log:

Near felt confident, following his discussions with various people, that he had sufficient information for the moment to risk leaving the safety of the high school in order to find himself a vacant room to serve as his base for the duration of his stay here in "Discedo". The high school had served as a decent temporary shelter, but he knew it would be too much to demand others to leave him be in what was usually considered a public gathering site in most societies with which he was familiar. If he laid claim on an apartment room, people were more likely to respect his wish for solitude. It wasn't a complete guarantee, especially if rooms were scarce; there was the unpleasant possibility that he would be pressured by the populace at some point to admit another into his residence. Once he had found his room, however, he could probably dwell on that difficulty.

He had prepared himself to leave during what seemed to be midday, for it seemed possible that the monsters he had heard so much about were less likely to attack during that time of day; if this ended up not being the case, at least in full what might pass as daylight, he increased his visibility, and his chances of escape. Near had paused only long enough to check his communication device once more before he left; he had a few new responses, however they could wait, as those conversations were no longer providing immediately vital pieces of information.

That was when he saw the post addressed to him. Considering the manner in which it was written, there was no doubt that it was a challenge of some fashion. Immediately he was made aware that there was another from his own world, and by the tone, and the fact that it referenced a public conversation only broadcast in the Kansai region of Japan, there were three possible suspects: the first, that it was Yagami Light, the original Kira himself. One person had suggested the possibility that the dead could somehow exist in this place as well as the living, that there was a way for such people to be reanimated, perhaps. So, though Kira had been dead for months in his world, he could not rule out the possibility that he had been resurrected upon his arrival in this city. Though the first seemed the most likely, based on Kira's relationship with L, there was the fact that Light had addressed him as L. If he had been brought back to life, and was aware of Near's sudden presence, he would know that L was, in fact, Nate "Near" River, and Yagami Light would not let such an important piece of information slip; he would want Near to know that he knew his true identity. If it were Kira, there was at least a fifty percent chance that Light would have addressed him as N: that would be the case if he did not desire a reply in return, only that he wished to challenge Near. By addressing it to L, it suggested that he wanted Near to respond, though this applied as well to the other two possibilities.

The second possibility was that the mystery person had a connection to Wammy's House, someone who knew about that broadcast, and was now trying to discover which L had arrived. While Mello was the most obvious candidate for this option, Near could not rule out Matt, and even Watari, the man behind the original L was in consideration: Near had never spoken to the man, however it was understood that he was the only person prior to the Kira case who had seen L; if he was the one assisting L in his endeavors, then there was a good chance that he at the very least condoned, if not shared, L's philosophy in regard to his reasons for taking on cases. Those of the special investigative team from the NPA - men such as Mogi or Aizawa- also fell in this category of possible suspects, though they were a slim-to-none chance.

The third, and most unlikely of possibilities was that he was one of the millions of Japanese who had witnessed the first battle of wits between L and Kira; though the post was in English, many Japanese studied the language in that country, so that was nothing to rule out the possibility. Most likely, if this proved to be correct, he came from the Kira supporter side, though all in all, not a threat in the least.

However, because Near was most certain of the Yagami Light possibility, he delayed his move until dusk, when he might move with less chance of being seen. Though this would leave him more vulnerable to a monster attack, he had greater chance of fleeing death-by-beast than a death Kira might deliver. Gathering his few belongings -tarot cards and communicator each went into a pocket, finger puppets took up their more animated places on his hands- he made his way through the school halls, creeping along slowly. Haste led to mistakes; he could afford to be slow while his life was not in clear and obvious danger.

Thusly, he approached the exit.
