fic writer memeBrief Intro
I'm an 18 year old girl from Singapore who is taking her A Levels in 2 months and really shouldn't still be writing fic but am doing so anyway because it relaxes me. Somehow. I drink too much coffee than it is healthy and I like green tea too. Sleep is for the weak. I turn lobster red when I drink (even beer).
What fandoms have you written in?
In order of oldest to newest: Fall Out Boy, Final Fantasy XII, Maplestory (yes i know), American Idol Season 8 (focus: kradam), Queer As Folk, SHINee, TVXQ (v. homin), Super Junior M, B.A.P, EXO, one lonely Russian Gymnastics and an increasing number of TTBY (every fic not kpop related shall never see the light of day)
Do the number of reviews tell how good a story is? Do reviews affect how you write in any way?
In my opinion, no! I think reviews tell how popular the fic is, but popularity doesn't always equal quality. We see this even in other forms of media. While I can't say that it has never affected me, I am trying (and succeeding!) in making it mean less. I write because I enjoy putting words into motion.
Do you use a beta?
I didn't use to! But I have found out recently it is very very useful to have one. Thank you develei for always giving your time to me.
What warnings have you used on your fiction?
Mostly kink warnings. Corset piercing; bloodplay; breathplay; d/s themes; bondage; self-fingering.
Have you ever stolen something from another person's work?
No. Well, I think most people just end up picking up ideas from things that we really like, and sometimes we try to replicate that in our works but in a different form or with different words.
Favorite fandom to write/read?
I love writing for EXO. Reading-wise, it will be the non-kpop fandoms I haven't dared wrote for: Suits, White Collar, Teen Wolf, Doctor Who, XMFC, Inception, Avengers ETC ETC
Favorite pairing?
EXO: OT3 MAKNAE LINE (and the pairings that are formed through it), Baekyeol, Baektao, Kaisoo, Xinglu, Xiuhan, possibly Xiutao, Baekhun, Lukai
Do you tend to write the same pairings/characters?
I think I do tend to stick to a few people, but I mix around! (now that you've mentioned it, the only people in exo i haven't written as part of a pair are Jongdae, Yixing, Joonmyun and Xiumin)
Favorite writer/writers?
My recent favourite is JOHN GREEN; his writing is so stark but so gorgeous too idk the balance is amazing. I enjoy Haruki Murakami, Andre Aciman (one book at least: call me by your name), Jeanette Winterson and Gregory Maguire.
What is your most popular fanfic and why do you think people find it so?
uhm I am fairly new in fic writing (or at least fic publishing on online-ing), but Wasted Daylight was pretty well-received? Which surprised me because I wrote it when my emotions were in a little bit of a mess. A former "most love lasts only for a while" was also well-received and it made me happy because it was first fic that almost hit the 5k mark.
Forget most people, what's the fanfic you've written you're most proud of?
I fear, I fear, 'twill prove a giddy world; it was a jump back to how i used to write (~flowery and vaguely abstract) but yet it managed to put down the 1.5k mark curse (3000~!)
Do you find writing easy? Hard? What are the most difficult aspects of writing you struggle with?
Writing just... is? I have a lot of struggles. Firstly, I cannot dialogue to save my life. I hate the way I write dialogue, and I am trying so hard to improve on banter and wit and just DIALOGUE. I have two fics in the works that deal very much with dialogue to introduce characterization and plot points, so we'll see how that goes (baekyeol/lukai & a separate kaitaosoo). Secondly, my vocabulary is TERRIBLE. I use the same few words EVERYWHERE. I have this awkward habit of having the word in chinese, but allowing it to completely elude me in english.
Pairings you avoid?
I haven't yet warmed up to Suho/anyone in general?
Are there any fanfiction trends/cliches you can't stand or are just sick of?
Kris always topping because he is ~tall and manly~; basically, when someone tops/bottoms because "they look like they are one"; fic dealing with bullying that are not done well
Are you guilty of any of the fanfiction trends/cliches you now hate? Or any other ones?
Yeah, the first one, but I've stopped thinking that way.
When you write, is there anything that helps? Music? Quiet room?
A song that relates to what I am writing; I always end up with a mini OST. For porn, I usually listen to Simon Curtis's Flesh and The Cab's Animal, sometimes I listen to some Cash Cash. Vienna Teng does amazing for me re: angst and All Time Low/Fall Out Boy/ Panic! usually have a song that I can use.
Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experience and yourself as a writer?
It has been for the most part, wonderful. More than the comments I have received, it is the friends I have made through them that have really stood up for me. It is the knowledge that hey! maybe you're too bad at this that has made me smile (i admit, a long well thought out comment makes my day), and is the chance to be able to write about things that interest you and trying to reassemble them so they still make sense.
As a writer, I think I have improved tremendously from the days when a friend and I wrote Greek Mythology! fic when we were 11 and sitting at the back of the class. I have learned to appreciate the nuances in language (which has helped in my literature papers) and idk, it has been fun, because seeing a story you write completed, finished, done, makes everything worth it, really.
