As somebody who does this for a living your whole post just makes me feel kind of sad. I have friends who feel the same way they just hate the small talk. Hell, I hate sitting there having things done to my own hair, feeling the pressure to say inane little things to whomever is doing my hair at the time ( ... )

I also dread small talk at the hair salon. For a while I had a stylist that I liked and went to regularly, so catching up when I went in for a cut wasn't too painful, but any other time I just try to stick my face into a magazine until instructed to lift my chin. As for being a highlights cheapie ... for the past two years or so I was getting my hair cut and colored for virtually nothing by a friend who went to beauty school, but then she got very pregnant and I didn't want to bother her. I made an appointment at the salon I used to go to, but my favorite stylist was no longer there, so I made an appointment with a stranger for a trim and "a couple of foils" and hoped for the best. I was so embarrassed when trying to ask if they charged by the foil and if I could just get four or so around my face. I didn't remember what the protocol was, having gone to my friend for so long, but I was sure I sounded hopelessly tightfisted.

It would be great if they could just turn the whole process into a drive-thru service.
