Maladicta was doing something she hadn’t done in a very long time. She had the vague impression that the two people she shared her present life with didn’t much approve of it, only because it had never come up or been mentioned. This was partly because she hadn’t done it in… Well, all right, so she couldn’t actually remember when she’d done it last ( Read more... )

"...an actual lawyer who actually cared about the fact there's no systematic process of justice!" William finished to Sacharissa as they rounded the last bend before their hut.

He was clearly quite thrilled about this development, such that he raised a rather cheerful arm in Maladicta's direction, because shouting hello seemed pointless when he'd be close enough to say it normally in a few moments.*

*One could detect a fundamental difference between William and his brother in this fact.

"It's about time," Sacharissa said, shaking her head. "At this stage, it's less justice than sort of arbitrary decision making. What became of those laws that were being written anyway?"

As they arrived, she moved to sit beside Maladicta, slipping an arm around her and kissing her check. "Hello - is something burning?"

William looked really, genuinely happy about something, and she found her eyebrows worrying a touch in the middle, which she was fairly certain was not the appropriate facial expression to have when seeing someone you loved in a good mood. This of course distracted her long enough from retrieving her cigarette that by the time she had there was a slight singe on the fabric of her trousers and she'd managed to burn her knuckle, but at least wrestle the thing back between two fingers. She held it at her side. And slightly behind her hip.

Casually.

"Um?" Maladicta replied, glancing surreptitiously down at the place on her thigh where there was a little ash, but no actual, smoldering sparks, then back up.

"Mmn- no," she, and offered a smile, then glanced up toward William. Shenlong spared Sacharissa a moment to nose her affectionately before rounding on William, and Maladicta tugged her a bit nearer to avoid being smacked in the face with a very excited tail.

William crouched down to scratch behind Shenlong's ears with both hands, which had the added advantage he could use them to hold the dog back somewhat from licking his face off. Somewhat.

"I thought I smelled that, too," William offered to Sacharissa, because it was mildly curious. But only mildly. He turned his attention to Maladicta - that which wasn't diverted by Shenlong - and added, "Good afternoon?"

It did double service as a greeting and an inquiry. William was efficient like that.
