Vimes had always spent a lot of time in the IPD office, often to the chagrin of of the staff whose job it was to man the desk. Doing work, even filing paperwork, was never easy when your boss was looking over your shoulder, and Vimes had looking-over-your-shoulder down to an art. But it was the closest thing he had to an office, so he didn't much care how his employees felt about it.

That said, he had been spending even more time than usual in the office since new year's. It was a good way to avoid people.

He looked up as Maladicta came in. "Corporal?"

"Hello, sir," she said, tucking her hands at the small of her back and stopping in front of his desk.

Vimes narrowed his eyes. Maladicta had never been one to go for smalltalk. The fact that she was trying it now made him immediately suspicious. "Uneventful." He sat back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest, all business. "What can I do for you?"
