"If Vimes had been afflicted with that silence, do you think anyone would have noticed?" William said as he entered, looking over his notes one last time before he tossed them on the table beside the door. He crossed to Maladicta, saying, "I think he'd have just glared at people the whole day, business as usual."

He absently leaned in, kissed her on the top of the head, then stopped as he was turning away and gave her a closer look. "Er... tough day? Olivia behaving?"

"She was fine," Maladicta said, not looking all the way over her shoulder to check, but glancing that way.

"Perfectly communicative but not screaming. I think she almost rolled over at one point. Terribly ambitious of her."

"It's a little early for rolling over, isn't it?" William said, looking mildly concerned. He directed the look past Maladicta, as if expecting to see Olivia rolling off the bed in the background.
