I've been finding it hard to update my LJ as I've gotten more and more facebooked. It's far easier to spend 30 seconds writing a status update or a comment, than it is to sit down and write out and fully-fleshed out journal entry ( Read more... )

Very insightful. We tend to impose our Western comfort driven morality on the rest of the world without realizing that it really only works for us...and not that well. Haiti is just one of a long list of similar attempts as Americanizing the globe.

Vietnam, Colombia, Iraq, Iran, the former Yugoslavia, Afghanistan.... We're unable to fathom that people think differently and are motivated by different things than we are. Money and luxuries don't drive everything.

True, although the Food Aid problem is bigger than the US's contributions. It's a hard problem to think about, because at every step it's in everyone's interest to keep the status quo. The charity organizations are motivated to keep donations moving, the locals are motivated to receive the donations, and the media and Hollywood are motivated to play up to the hype because images of poor starving refugees clutching blankets emergency rations are great ratings (at least until the public gets bored and moves on ( ... )
