I need a new computer, maybe two, for the kids. I've been looking everywhere for a computer with Windows XP but no one sells them anymore. I don't really want a used computer and I don't want to use Ebay. I do NOT want a computer with Vista. Ugh ( Read more... )

Not sure if you can buy an "XP OEM disk" locally. If so, I would suggest buying all the parts to make a tower and building one yourself. Cheaper and you get what you want.

That's an idea, too. I already have the XP OEM disk. I bought a custom-made computer a few years ago and got a good deal on it. Maybe that's what I'll do. Thanks!

No problem, I built my own and have a super fast computer and saved tons doing it this way. Every so often (every 2 years approx) I buy a new motherboard and CPU and get a new comp basically. Also like mentioned below if you can wipe the drive and reinstal XP with no compatability issues, go that route. But I have no clue if that is possible.
A thing to remember is that the minimum RAM required for vista is 2 gigs, I find that shitty. No wonder people hate it.

Yes you can.
We do it all the time at work with any new computer we get.
Immediately gets downgraded to XP.

If you are going to buy something from say Dell, HP, etc.
Just go to the support site and check for drivers. If there is a section for Windows XP then you'll be fine.

So if I buy a system from Dell I can look up my computer make/model and find XP drivers? Or do I have to search for drivers for each individual device like video card, sound card, CD rom, etc? And if I find the drivers, at what point do I install them? Sorry for all the questions; I've never done this before.

Just install XP and then install the drivers.
Most OEMs will have their downloads listed by operating system so you should get them all in one list.
Alot of them will give you the option for the driver CD as well.
Those should also have the XP versions of the drivers too.
Makes it even easier.

You might be better off buying a new computer, wiping the harddrive, and reinstalling it with XP. I know Jim can buy it (the install disc for XP) in the student store for super cheap.

Right. I wondered if anyone knew whether wiping the drive and installing XP would work with the hardware on the new Vista computers. I know there are a bunch of compatibility issues with Vista and... well... everything. Hehe.

Thanks. I have the disk already and can get a key. I just don't know if a Vista loaded computer would work if I wiped it and installed XP. I mean, I don't know if the sound card, etc would work with an OS downgrade.

Most of them have drivers for XP, because most corporate applications are still XP. Shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for the link... I could only find one computer there with XP and it was a pretty low-end Acer. Sigh.

I'm sorry. Call them and they will give you anything you want with XP. They will. Really. What you see is the basic storefront.
