In daylight he pretends that reading is nothing worthwhile but I assume he's seen a lithograph or two from something similar to Therese Philosoph so he knows that she might be interested in it (even if she isn't in actuality). It can be either a fantasy or a dream, it's up to you.
Not how I was thinking it would go but it worked so utterly well. I'm not sure what I was aiming at anymore either, but I loved your take on it. Belle knowing EXACTLY what that book was and tossing him on his behind was hilarious!
