Mulan meets Shang's father for the first time after their marriage. She's nervous about meeting the important general, given her past, but he seems to rather like her. That is, until she recounts to him a story of her father's military past. He freaks out, and forbids Shang from ever seeing him again. Both are shocked, and of course, refuse until he explains himself. As it turns out, when the general was younger, he had an affair with a servant that resulted in pregnancy. His family found out, and demanded that he get rid of the illegitimate daughter that resulted from it.
Not being able to kill his own daughter, he asked an honourable soldier of his, Fa Zhou, to raise the girl as his own. He had assumed that Zhou had informed his daughter of her adopted status. He hadn't. Mulan is Shang's half-sister. To complicate matters, Mulan had been planning to use the meeting to inform her father-in-law that he was going to be a grandfather.
