Shang/Mulan Mulan is somewhat worried about her wedding night. Her marriage is a love match, but most aren't, and there are stories about new husbands who appear gentle until they reach the bedroom, where they become cruel and selfish. Mulan knows that Shang isn't like that at all, but he's a strong man who could very easily overpower her if he wished. Beyond that, though he'd proven to be understanding in most regards, he was raised rather traditionally, and he might be forceful in his assertion of her marital duties. When they reach the marital bed on the actual night, Shang notices how nervous and uncomfortable she seems, and thinks she is regretting marrying him. When she reveals her worries to him, he proves her wrong by being nothing but the gentle, decent man she knew that she married.

Mulan sat on the edge of her and Shang’s bed, tracing circles on the sheets as he closed the door. She knew that privacy was obviously necessary for their wedding night, but in all honest, she wasn’t ready. She loved Shang, yes, but she had heard many stories of kind husbands who were brutal in the bedroom. Mulan was strong, but Shang was stronger. Combine that with a rather traditional upbringing... it was enough to make Mulan wish she were fighting Shan Yu again
