Esmeralda gets a chance to really change the world: she can see the future, and change it. Specifically, the futures of other Disney stories. She does her best to change the bad endings. She sees what Gaston will do to the Beast, and so she stops Belle from ever showing him the image in the mirror. Maurice is carted off to the sanatorium, and the curse on the Beast remains permanent, as she never realizes her love for him. She sees Meg about to be crushed by a pillar, and restrains her. Hercules is crushed by it instead, and the world descends into chaos. Finally, she sees what will happen to Quasimodo’s mother, and hides her in the shadows until Frollo leaves. Quasimodo lives a happy life with a mother who loves him. When Frollo inevitably discovers his lust for Esmeralda, there is no unlikely knight to save her, and she burns. Fate has a way of working itself out, and doesn’t take kindly to interference, as Esmeralda learned the hard way.
