The King and Queen barely got a glimpse of their daughter's kidnapper, and even that was distorted in darkness. They never knew what she looked like.
So how could they fathom what she looked like as a younger, healthier woman?
They couldn't. As the King and Queen start to face a rocky patch in their relationship caused by the loss of their daughter leading to the King's lost of interest, the Queen searches for a companion. Mother Gothel takes advantage of this. The Queen falls for the well dressed, dark-haired woman. They flirt, get close, eventually leading up to sex, all of the time the Queen not even suspecting that this is the woman who ripped her daughter from her own bedroom years earlier and now keeps her locked away in a tower.
And what the hell- Bonus points if the Queen's extreme resemblance to Rapunzel turns Gothel on... D:
