"Milo" Thatch was born Amelia Thatch, only grandchild of Thaddeus Thatch. Her parents were explorers, and thus often dressed her/treated her in ways that society at the time deemed 'masculine'. By the time her parents died when she was young, she was already used to being thought of as a boy/being allowed to do "men's" things, so when Thaddeus adopted her, he just decided to raise her as a boy, so that she could keep living the way she was used to
