[It... had not been a good week for young Jane Calvin.
The ordeal with the mist may be over, but the damage it caused to her psyche is great. For the past week Jane has been terrified of even closing her eyes for a mere moment-- not after the horrible nightmares she had had. She was jumpy and paranoid, convinced that the mist could return again at any time. After that false alarm of it "seemingly" disappearing, how could she not think so? Her suitcase from the bunker was still packed and sitting beside her bed. She couldn't bring herself to unpack it, not wanting to be unprepared if the students should be forced to go down there again.
She had also called her mother every night since being released from the bunkers. Just hearing her mother's voice made Jane well up with both relief and homesickness. How Jane wished she could go home to her, but she was terrified of leaving the school. The mist could come back at any time. As much as she had wanted to leave before, she couldn't possibly do so now.
On top of that, Russell had left. The two children made their tearful goodbyes to each other a few days ago when she saw him off. They promised to write to each other, but it still wouldn't be the same as having her friend there at the school with her.
Now Jane sits alone in her dorm, on her bed, holding herself.
Rocking back and forth.]
