Makin' Music

So... I know how I make music. It's a pretty straightforward thing for me now and feels pretty much repetitive and I'm bored. I'm thinking of only writing music for a while with another person as a band and I'm curious about you other musicians. I'm curious about your methods of song-writing with other people... I want to learn something new ( Read more... )

Used to start with drum loops, but as I learned more about melody and harmony that changed. I'm not exactly active at the moment, but every so often something inspires me to go record a drum loop, a bassline, even just a sample to manipulate.... What it boils down to is that I'd find one piece that I really really love and build the music around it.

That's pretty much where I'm at myself. ;)

i've had the same problem since i wrote twilight. writing the last album with nonnon (by the way, did you ever pick up that album? album swap time?) definitely helped, but writing with someone else opens an entirely new set of problems. since then, i've been back where i started.... i have a ton of material half written, but it just seems same old, same old. i'm attempting to write a black metal album, but it's been slow (mostly because i've been waiting on other people, which is part of the problem). i've thought getting new gear, or new programs would help, but so far, no deal. i do need to invest in a bunch of new gear regardless. my method consists of building sample banks, choose a set, modify and tweak sounds, then build loops, export them to a sequencer, destroy the loops, and rebuild the track adding melody, bass, atmosphere etc. pretty simple.

let me know if you figure something out...i could use some ideas myself.

I didn't get it yet. trade yes.
yeah man that sounds just like me again... I'm being pulled in a few directions genre speaking and I think maybe that's why I can't focus on one as well right now. I'd love to write an ambient album, an indie/experimental album and a further turntablist direction from the this last displacer. so little time.

You want to work on an it-clings track? That'll definitely toss something new into the works.

chris used to just send me sounds or loops that he made and i would either incorporate them into an existing song or build something new around them. i have never liked writing music with other people, it's always been a thing where we trade sounds and then i put it together. it's basically a lot like remixing--just find someone to write original music with and then you each remix the other's stuff but instead of treating the original pieces (which may just be fragments) as whole songs, just treat the end result as the product.

that's exactly how I feel about writing with other people... and when we sit down to do all of it together it never has the right focus... and I just fuck around way too much without a goal in mind I guess.

Well, I don't often write music with anyone else, but when I'm hanging out with Geramie and messing around, I find that I try to make a conscious effort to understand the "feel" he's going for, and how my style can add my "touch" to it, but keep that same feel.... I guess.

Maybe I just really need to think about it.
