hm. i went to a jewish school for elementary and middle school, and we were discouraged from celebrating halloween. i distinctly remember in second grade, my hebrew teacher sent home a note to our parents explaining why we should not be allowed to go trick-or-treating. also, in fourth grade i wore some kind of halloween hairclip to school (shut up. i'm embarassed. i also wore my hair in side ponytails) and my teacher took me aside and made sure that i was aware that we didn't celebrate halloween at my school. of course, i disagree... i see it as more of an american tradition and pastime than anything else. but there are some people who really do feel strongly about that kind of thing. i know this doesn't really pertain to the subject of your post at all... but just be aware that she's not completely, 100% out of line to think like that.

yup no i realize that, and how it's pagan and everything and i thought about that but then i made the assumption that it didn't have anythign to do with it being pagan, just that she had celebrated halloween her entire life and was surprised to find that i, a jew, also celebrate the same holiday.

it goes into the same category as when she apologized for using the words 'candy cane' around me because "i can't eat them, they're for christmas."

i guess that could be. i've only talked to her like twice so you definitely know her better than i do.

in that case, never say the b-word around her. (and by b-word i mean bagel. because she can't eat them, bagels are for brunch after synagogue)
