Ice

I recently thought of a metaphor to describe the differences between Cuddy and Wilson and the way in which they relate to House. For the sake of this metaphor, House is like ice. Driving on ice is a bit of an art, and it requires an understanding not only of basic physics, but also a comprehension of the behaviour of ice. However, a lot of people ( Read more... )

You are amazing. This is a perfect metaphor for the situation between H/W and H/C. When Cuddy was his confident boss, she was able to cooperate/control House. She had the ultimate power of firing him if all else failed. When she perjured herself, he had to do what she wanted to keep himself out of jail. When I look at the banter between them, in general, she has the upper hand. For instance, in "Resignation" when House is looking into the patient's room, he pages Cuddy so she'll see a "really cool heart attack ( ... )

I miss old Cuddy, to be honest. Lately, I have been looking at season seven and Cuddy's actions in it, and can scarcely believe that she has turned into... Whatever she is, now. I was never a massive Cuddy fan myself, but I am still having trouble accepting her behaviour towards House. I think I'm in a bit of denial; like I'm grieving at the new knowledge that yes, this is how Cuddy is. Not always, perhaps, but right now. She is capable of this. I don't think she's abusive or evil, but I think she's not compatible with House when it counts the most ( ... )

Because I'm OCD, I thought I should just rephrase something. House and Wilson's relationship is not simply a case of opposites attracting, because they're clearly not complete opposites. It's very interesting, because they are mirrored in each other. In House, there is Wilson, and in Wilson, there is House. But at the same time, House is House and Wilson is Wilson; it is not a matter of two sides of the same coin, so much as it is... Them providing the other with what they need regardless of the circumstance. If Wilson needs to be strong because House is, for instance, vulnerable, I believe he can be, because deep inside, Wilson has a little bit of House in him. It's strange; they can switch places if need be. Wilson can be House and House can be Wilson, because they both possess those similar qualities.

I'm sorry that this is so messy. My thinking is not up to par right now.

I completely understand what you're saying. I've one or two friends in recent years (when I've been more or less laid up) who were gigantic fuck-ups, addicts, drunks, etc. I joked that I enjoyed "chaos by proxy." Then I'd have to heave them out of my life. Not saying that's the same situation with Wilson, but he does need House's fireworks ( ... )

Browsing your blog after your insightful post on soophelia's post about the House spoilers today. :-)

Love this post! Completely agree, except I'd even take it a step farther. Wilson ENJOYS the loss of control on the ice. He finds it both stimulating and freeing, in stark contrast to the rest of his structured life. Cuddy is the opposite. She wants to control the chaos - the 'ice'. Wilson is drawn to it (there are even potentially dark undertones here, but I won't get into them now).

Something I've been thinking from the start of this story arc is that yes, Cuddy loves House. But she doesn't LIKE him. Wilson does.

Yes, I absolutely agree with you that Wilson likes the loss of control. He feeds off of it. He's very controlled and repressed for the great majority of his life, but I think that's a farce and goes against his true nature, in a sense. House, however, does not generally hide his nature in the same way... Of course, there are exceptions, as seen on the show, but usually House is unrepressed and uncontrolled. It must be rather freeing for Wilson ( ... )

On second thought, perhaps your thought that Cuddy loves House but does not like him is most accurate.
