Characters --> Yuki

Personality:

Yuki is oft described as a polite, quiet child with a gloomy disposition and an unfortunate tendency to snark horribly when unimpressed. This is a fairly accurate representation of his character, which is a direct product of his past and all the fun hoops he had to leap through to get to where he stands today. Having seen far more of the world than any fifteen-year-old has any right to, he is not a person with a lot of faith. Critical, cynical and fairly pessimistic, he tends to think of himself as a realist, which just means that he spends a whole lot of time figuring out the downside to every silver lining and acting as reality check for the people around him - whether they need it or not. Mostly, however, he’s your stereotypical teenager - unenthusiastic at all costs, fairly petulant and full of the belief that he knows better.

On the offset, he is not particularly social. This does not, in any way, imply that he is antisocial, but a good deal of his problem lies in the fact that he’s simply very awkward with social interactions. This unfortunate trait has nothing to do with his upbringing; it’s just an inherent part of his personality. Words don’t come easily to him, and he’s always been fond of the age-old adage of words speaking louder than actions, anyway. Like your typical fifteen-year-old boy, he squirms at mushy talks, takes all opportunity to sound sarcastic and tries very hard to be cool, with mixed results. The boy can honestly communicate better with computers and numbers than people, really, which suits him just fine, because he likes electronics anyway. Online, he’s probably a different person all together - far more confident and in his natural habitat, talkative and fairly enthusiastic. Even offline, however, he is practical, logical and resourceful, being very quick on the up-take and diligent when he needs to be.

At a core of his personality is someone who’s seen far too much senseless destruction and pain to truly love the world. While he is amazingly well-adjusted for someone who grew up as a orphan, watched his parental figures betray each other and get killed in horrible ways and then growing up for the next five years as an assassin and watching his peers kill other people in horrible ways - it does not mean that he’s emerged from it unscathed. He’s slow to trust, slow to believe and even slower to accept offers of friendship. The caution comes with his line of work but also with his ingrained suspicion of good-will in general. On the other hand, he does have a soft spot for the genuine and the weak, but he’s also a big boy and doesn’t want to associate himself with that - therefore, he will go at great lengths to act gruff and unresponsive when the need arises.

More than anything, though, he loves and he loves deeply. Despite all his grumbling and moodiness, he is, at heart, a caring and sentimental person. He’s the sort of person who loves once in his lifetime and who loves forever - even though his ‘father’ figure betrayed his ‘mother figure’ and killed her while she was trying to protect him, he still carries a photo of them around religiously. He’s disillusioned but not callous, and cares far more deeply than he’s willing to admit. He’s not always the best at expression his emotions, however, and his form of care appears in small and quaint forms - a glance here, a gruff word of acknowledgement there, and horrible video game jokes when you’re down. All in all, he’s just an awkward teenager trying to make his way in this world.

… as a last note, he’s actually incredibly high-strung. In general, he’s fairly mellow, if more than a bit sarcastic, but when things start piling up - especially when people abuse finances and do things like purchase every cute decoration down the street. He will snap and he will snap horrifically. During those periods, he has a tendency to shout, scream and wave calculators about for emphasis. Most people learn after a while not to take him seriously when he’s in these episodes.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ Computers and Numbers - This kid is a whiz at computers. He is the communications link for the KB team and his main during missions is via laptop - he helps disable alarms, plots out destinations, cracks networks and basically handles all of the virtual things. While not a genius at it, most of his ability with computers comes from hard work alone. He’s truly passionate about technology and about aiding his team the best he can. When it comes to numbers, however, he’s a natural - despite being one of the youngest members on the team, he’s the one that handles all the finances of their above-ground flower shop. He’s very capable with mathematics and has a very good number sense.
+ Spatial Awareness - It’s implied that Yuki has some form of a photographic memory. He’s capable of memorizing the layout of a warehouse after having only entered it once, and is capable of directing people accurately through that warehouse while blind. This makes him a valuable asset to the team.
+ Street Smarts - having grown up on the street and spending most of his young life stealing from gangs for a living, Yuki is very knowledgeable about how to survive in a world that’s against you in so many different ways. He knows how to pick locks, disassemble bicycles/cars/anything with parts that can be resold, how to slip handcuffs and other fun things like that. He’s neither ashamed nor proud of his knowledge on this matter, but he definitely wouldn’t hesitate to put it to good use if the need arises.

- Socially Awkward - And how. He can interact with people his age just fine at a superficial level, but when things delve into emotional topics and things that require a good deal of emotional intuition, he’s toast. He has trouble putting his emotions to words and tends to be more than a little awkward about all of it. This makes interacting with him a little painful. He also has a tendency to be unnecessarily blunt at times - which makes for beautiful foot-in-mouth situations.
- Nag - He’s the poster boy for stinginess. Growing up as an orphan without a lot of funds and having been appointed the unofficial finances organizer for the flower shop, he understands the value of money a little too well. Therefore, he has a tendency to go off on a rant if he sees money being squandered or misused. This tends to carry over to material goods as well - he abhors waste and will nag you forever about little things that bother him until you feel the urge to toss him into a lake, or something. If he thinks he knows better than you, then he will tell you - this is not always received with a positive attitude.
- Mistrustful - He is painfully slow to trust and even slower to accept offers of friendship. This paranoia stems from his upbringing, but also just from his inherent nature. He will find any number of reasons not to trust you directly until he runs out of excuses, almost as though he really doesn’t want to trust you rather than out of any practical need.

-- will you quit that? [When the video jostles on, there is a sullen looking boy pushing up his glasses, shrewd eyes peering out from behind thick lenses. He spends a few moments opening his mouth, and then closing it when an unknown force bumps into him repeated from behind. A hissing whisper-] Okay, that’s it. One more time, and I’m putting you back in this pokeball and tossing you up a tree. Do you want to be in a tree? I don’t think you want to be in a tree. Just stay put.

[An aggravated sigh, but it looks like whatever it is has settled down a little. He turns back to the screen, and coughs.] So I heard that most people have been here a while - I’ve just got here myself pretty recently, so I don’t know all the ropes yet. Anyone have any tips for a beginner? [His eyes seem to light up as he leans into the screen, pushing at his glasses.] Type advantages, gameshark codes, and EVs, preferably in that order. It looks like this generation introduced a few typings that weren’t in the original games, so I need to take those into account.

And by the way-- [The video screen pivots, and suddenly, there is a beldum on-screen! It whirls and clicks and does a weird 180 in mid-air while staring into the screen intently.] -- anyone know if -- [… the beldum immediately rams its head into a tree] -- that’s the only thing it can do, or something? Because that’s all that it’s been doing, and I swear it’s doing more damage to itself than the tree.

Third Person Sample:

This was a bad idea.

This was a really, really bad idea.

He wasn’t entirely sure how it started, but it probably stemmed from that off-handed remark about the length of the road in proportion to the length of the journey thing, which grew into a full-blown tantrum half-way down the road when it became apparent that the only thing his travel companions wanted to do was to picnic for the next three weeks. Now, he found himself clinging to a giant hunk of metal for dear life, feeling like the world just dropped out from under his feet and he was doing some kind of a weird impression of a moonwalk.

Which probably wasn’t all too inaccurate, considering the situation. But he really wished he knew how it came to that he was attempting to ride his Beldum like a skateboard so he can actually go back and cite the several hundred reasons racing through his mind this instant about how this was a terrible idea and shouldn’t have even been conceptualized in the first place.

He closed his eyes. He opened his eyes. The Beldum below him whirled and clicked and blinked his red eye like camera shutters. No, the situation wasn’t going away, and this honestly wasn’t fun anymore. Shifting his grip on the Beldum, he pulled himself back onto its back, and gave it a sharp rap on the head for good measure. The ensuing echo through mostly empty space was not reassuring - really, what was inside of that thing? What if it was really as empty as it sounded? It occurred to him that it may just be his luck to have received the only literal airhead of a pokemon on this face of Johto, and grimaced. If he didn’t think too much about it, maybe he won’t jinx himself.

Moving carefully along the side, he got up onto his knees, and then his feet on shaky legs. Arms out for balance, and oh gods, what was that just shot down his shirt right now? Resisting the urge to jump down and curl up into a ball, he puffed his chest out and breathed.

All right, this wasn’t so bad. Just a bit of an exercise, right? It wasn’t like it was really going to-

He startled himself with his own screams when the Beldum decided that now would be a good time to bolt for it.
