Shinkuu Yuusetsu, or ‘Hollow Fusion’ is a vaguely obscure slice-of-life manga with boy’s love elements as its premise. It’s the story of several teenagers living in a country where everybody is paired up at a young age due to a certain biological element to their body not found in any of the neighbouring countries. The people of that country are split into two groups biologically: receivers and suppliers. A supplier generates a certain kind of life-force or energy in their body which accumulates over time, and a receiver accepts that energy - this partnership is one of dependence, because a receiver is unable to generate that energy but needs it to live, where as a supplier is able to generate their own energy, but is unable to do so in moderation, and suffers from pain and fevers if the excess energy is not taken away. In the manga, it’s explained that this function isn’t any particularly magical, nor is it fantastic in anyway - it’s just like eating, a symbiotic relationship between pairs who have this particular biological make-up. The power transfer is done through their lips - what constitutes as a kiss in regular life and in surrounding countries is just another way to feed in that country.
The manga details the school life between two particular pairs of youths who live in this country, and the transfer student who comes from a neighbouring country to study the culture and language. The first half of the manga is about Rael and his partner, Alexi, and their trials as they attempt to navigate life with their bond - things like going abroad, going on field trips and even emotional attachment issues are explored. The second half of the manga details their relationship with their parents, and Alexi’s subsequent discovery of his own mother, in the neighbouring country.
This manga can be found on mangafox, mostly scanlated - the third volume is a compilation of official doujinshi, but was never translated.
Personality:
It’s a little hard to describe Rael in but a single word, because he is a character that’s fairly dynamic. The friendly sort, he is irrepressibly cheerful, though not to the point of annoyance, warm and compassionate, though not to the point of overdose, and generally gets along with anyone. As a general rule, he is sociable - he likes talking with and getting to know others. This is partially linked to the fact that his mother is a translator and that he himself is a natural at languages - you can say that languages are in his blood. Along with a strong sense of language is a love for poignant communication. While he is not overly fastidious by any means, he does feel most comfortable being informed of things and generally getting thoughts out in the open. He doesn’t like to make baseless assumptions and prefers a straight-forward attitude.
At the core of Rael’s personality is his honesty. He shares an open sort of frankness with those around him and also with himself - if he believes something needs to be said, then he would most certainly say it. Not the sort of person to beat around the bush, he rarely hides his thoughts and enjoys receiving the same sort of respect from others. However, this frankness does not extend itself to an ignorance of tact - he can be very tactful when he chooses to be, and knows how to best put things in a way that other people can accept it. He simply chooses not to bottle up whatever that needs to be said. This is also linked with his decisive personality - while pragmatic and fairly logical, unlike other youths of his age, he knows how to make decisions for himself and his partner, and firmly knows exactly what he wants in life.
That being said, his relationship with Alexi constitutes for a large part of his personality, seeing as they are essentially partners for life - Alexi depends on him for the energy he generates, and he depends on Alexi to take the pain away. Therefore, his partner comes first and foremost to him, and he bases a lot of his decisions around this. Of the two, he is probably the one who’s most secure about his position in the relationship, though it’s been shown that at times, he does become insecure if communication isn’t happening in a way that he is used to. Because of his partnership with Alexi, he is loyal to a fault and highly dedicated to his partner. His partnership with Alexi also showcases his stubborn and hard-headed side - an example would be how he stockpiled his power for a week, something that causes fever, convulsions and much pain to his person, so that when Alexi came back from his trip, he could charge without disliking the taste of the power (when he supplies others with the power, the taste of the other person circulates around his body for a while; Alexi dislikes that taste immensely). His actions here almost borderline on foolishness, but it shows the extent that he is willing to go for his partner. He cares deeply for Alexi, and it’s no exaggeration that Alexi is the most important person in his life.
Even outside of that partnership, he is surprisingly strong-willed. However, he’s also bit of a sentimental sap, capable of saying terribly sappy things with a smile on his face. In this, we can see that he is an optimistic. A realistic optimist, but still quite an optimist - he doesn’t like dwelling on the negative sides of things, and prefers to simply move on as needed. Because of this, he can be somewhat oblivious at times, capable of saying very blunt and cheerful things without entirely realizing the undercurrent or the connotations of his words. Despite that, however, where it matters, he is quite a perceptive person. Having been at Alexi’s side for practically all his life, he can read Alexi inside and out - and while there are still some elements of his partner that elude him, he knows more about Alexi than just about anyone else. This, as an extension, also applies to his other relationships, as he really is just a very perceptive and empathetic person. Fairly good at reading people, he takes everything into consideration and is very thoughtful.
Compared to Alexi, he is quite a bit more laid back, but far more out-going, with a penchant to playfully tease those who are the closest to him (Alexi gets the brunt of this). He… also has a surprisingly large appetite.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
(+) book smart; he achieved the highest score for the students of his year, and was able to win a scholarship for a trip abroad to the neighbouring country to study their language and customs. This, by extension, also tells us that he has a terrific affinity with languages.
(+) perceptive; he is very used to reading somewhat socially awkward people who believe in silent communication - namely, Alexi. This, as an extension, makes him very sensitive to the needs of others.
(+) optimistic; as a person, he dislikes wallowing in the past and always resolves to do things in order to… well, get them done. Therefore, he is always forward-looking and fairly cheerful, making him the mood-maker of his partnership.
(+) supplier; as a supplier and one with that particularly biological function, he is able to generate his own power.
(-) insecurities; when communication breaks down, or when things are not put readily into the open, Rael becomes easily insecure, especially about the relationship between himself and Alexi, but this can also extend to other relationships. He depends far too much on open honesty.
(-) hard-headed; when Rael resolves to do something, no matter how foolish (see: saving up power for a week for Alexi), very little is able to dissuade him. This makes him almost unreasonable at times.
(-) oblivious; he can be fairly oblivious towards the romantic undertones of something, capable of saying very ridiculous things with a straight face and not realize just the connotations of what he’s said. Things like ‘Alexi has built up a complete dependency of me’ or ‘I’m the only one he really wants’ are pretty much matter-of-fact for him, but can carry very, very different connotations to people who don’t understand his culture.
(-) supplier; as a supplier, he can’t get rid of his excess energy himself, and relies on a receiver to take it away. If he doesn’t get rid of the excess in time before it starts accumulating terribly, he experiences fevers, dry heaving and a whole lot of pain. Because of this, Alexi is indispensable, and he can’t very well function without him.
In canon, the partners have to charge multiple times a day in order to function at all - in Route, this will be toned down to perhaps once per day or two.

So I was thinking-[the video flickers on to show the visage of a young man with mild, mossy-green hair, thoughtful look plastered all over his face as he considers his next words. By his side, a little eevee pipes up, rubbing her face all up and over the screen until he makes a shushing noise and pulls her away, smiling apologetically.] -- It’s kinda clear that we’re all from different countries, right? I mean, ever since I got here, I’ve been hearing about fantastical worlds where magic and things like that are possible - stuff that I’ve never thought was possible, really. It should stand up to logic that since we’re all from different places that we should probably speak different languages, too.
So that got me thinking - I mean, back in my world, each country had more or less their own language, and it was always interesting to see the similarities and differences. What kind of languages did you guys used to speak back in your own world? Could you describe it a little for me?
[at the prospect, he looks… genuinely excited.] I think it’d be interesting, to compare language structures. Even if you can’t speak it anymore, there has to be something that made your language unique, right?
Third Person Sample:
Technology wasn’t his forte. He sat there for a little while, fiddling with the device and trying, in vain, to get it to cough up some sort of a signal. It resembled a telephone in its design, he decided, with its dials and buttons and strange, electric beeping noises, but honestly, he’s never once seen a telephone that had a screen that more or less resembled a television. Still, though, he was helpfully informed that this was a communications device, and that in itself gave it priority over anything else. Giving it another push, he poked and prodded at the buttons with single-minded patience.
Therefore, it was no surprise that the device eventually spluttered to life, static crackling as it cheerfully displayed lines after lines of text. It took another moment of scanning the text quickly before the relief set in - everything was in his own language. Good; it meant communication really wasn’t a problem. Though in hindsight, the woman who had explained all of this to him was rather fluent in his language as well, and apart from a few strange word translations that he couldn’t quite catch, everything was relatively smooth. It stood to logic that this was either his country, or somewhere where the people spoke his language fluently - this would make things easier, he thought, in the grand scheme of things.
Next to him, the little fox-like creature that had accosted him upon arrival pawed at the ground, making incessant squeaky noises. He turned his attention to it curiously, watching as it pounced on a stalk of grass - and then, moving on, to pounce on a small, worm-like creature that squirmed away as quickly as it came. The little fox was sure energetic, were his thoughts, as he reached out a hand to tickle at one of its ears. He was marginally gratified to hear it squeak in delight, before rubbing up to him for more affection that he was more than happy to dole out.
This may be a strange place, but the wildlife sure was friendly. Absently, he turned his attention back to the device, eyes sweeping the length of it in search of the ‘call’ button. If he was here, then Alexi had to be too; and it was just a matter of finding him.
