ugh. for those that don't know, i have chosen to take at least a semester, if not a year off from schooling. i may take a couple of night classes here and there, but i won't be a full-time student. i'll basically be taking over my grandfather's lawncare business for the year, providing the necessary funds for when i do go to college

I took a year off, and it did a great deal of good, but there's also a serious downside...
You become ineligible for the national merit scholarship, which can give you a good chunk of change. Had I done that, combined with the scholarship from the school of music and the federal pell grant, I would actually be getting a refund check from the school each semester.
And as for not knowing what you want to do, there's a lot of core classes you can get out of the way. For example, to get my MUSIC EDUCATION degree, I've still got to take an english, a math, 2 natural sciences, 1 behavioral science, as well as quite a few others that have slipped my mind at the moment.
Take it or leave it, but I just thought you might be able to put this information to use.

personally, i think it's an awesome idea. kudos to you for having the courage to do what a lot of people secretly wish they could do.

I agree. I am in a sort of similar situation. Just when I think I had gotten all my auditions done and all applications, NO WAY, and I had to reapply to all new schools, like, this weekend.
So, I thougth about taking a year off and doing volunteer work in a third world country, LOL, honestly.
But, I don't think college would like that, especially without a year of practicing cello.
It's not the most convenient thing to carry around a cello in the Amazon.
Nonetheless, what I am trying to say is DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO and what you feel is the smartest thing. Everything has its downsides.
Goodluck,
Alex
