everyone (except one person, so far) is still avoiding the issue about seeing other very happy families, content without any interaction or acknowledgement of a god. why aren't they miserable and falling apart because of their lack of dependence on God?

i think that's a really good point. maybe it's just because "life is what you make of it" and everything boils down to perspective? although, i don't mean to say that not being dependent on God will cause serious problems, et cetera. in fact, one hypothetically could have a marvelous life without any religious interaction. however, at the end...

...but the existance of heaven/hell is a whole 'nother can of worms.

It could be all in our heads. Those people that depend on God, gods, or whatever, see it is their lack of faith and God is showing them they cant live without him. The families that dont have religious affiliations dont bog themselves down with the thought that if they dont believe correctly, pray often, and spread the word of something no one knows is real, then they will be punished. Im tying up my words, let me start over.
Back when i believed that everything was done by the hand of God, if something went wrong in my life, i always thought it was because i hadnt believed hard enough or i had displeased God in some way. But now, where i am just living my life, if something goes wrong, my world doesnt fall apart. I dont sit around blaming myself and wondering what i did to piss God off.
That might not be what you were looking for, but I hoped it helped.
and its good to know that im not the only one feeling things like this

i disagree
just because something bad happens to you doesnt mean you did something to piss God off and in result of that it doesnt mean hes punishing you
although everything that happens to you is in God's will but thats only because suffering shapes who you are as a person..
God doesnt want you to suffer but he knows it's going to happen because of the world we live in
so theres no reason to give up on God just because something bad goes on in your life...it's a reason live for God even more because in the end if you're with God there will be no suffering

GOD is for people who are afraid to establish their own principles!
YOU can't even believe in something unless there's an institution that tells you to do it!

ditto. about the part where you said that it's good to know you're not the only one feeling like this.

so i just defeated the purpose in using the word ditto.

I think people of every culture, historical place, et cetera has often depended upon someone else showing them a way, or taking care of them. I think whatever God you have is your father figure, the one that will protect and care for you, no matter what. I think extreme religious people have tweaked the meaning of God and religion into safeguarding themselves, to protect them from things they don't know, and making themselves feel safe, secure, and correct.
