One day, while out in the countryside, a nymph spied a
very handsome young man, and instantly fell head over heels in love
with him. She recognized him as a hunter whom she had seen him hunting
alongside Artemis herself. Watching him from a distance, she followed
as he stalked his prey through the woods, growing frustrated that she
could not speak to him. Soon, she found herself presented with an
opportunity; after he became separated from hunting party, he called
out, “Is anyone here?”
She happily repeated back, “Here”.
Looking around for the source of the voice, he yelled out, “Let us
come together”.
She replied, “Let us come together,” with excitement clear in her
voice as she rushed at him with open arms.
Shocked to find that he was about to be tackled by the nymph, the
hunter pushed her away stating that he would rather die than make love
to her.
She was so crushed that she ran away, crying, consumed by his
rejection to the point where she couldn’t bring herself to eat or
sleep, considering how things could have gone differently for her.
Soon, she felt bold enough to attempt a second chance, and head out
towards where she last saw him. After searching the forest high and
low, the nymph came upon the young man staring into a pool of water,
transfixed. As she crept closer, she could hear him speaking.
“Who are you, beautiful?” he questioned, leaning closer to the water.
“I’m ***cissus, why do you not answer me?”
She realized that he had caught a glimpse of his own reflection and
was trying desperately to converse with it. Moving to his side, she
tried to get his attention by calling out his name as she noticed that
he was starting to look sickly. He refused to budge. She offered him
food, wine, even her body, but all he wanted was to stare at his own
face. Eventually, the time spent crouched down by the pool took a toll
on him, and he wasted away. She watched, heartbroken, as in his place
a flower sprouted, and cried so hard that she eventually blacked out.
