What Do I Want to Do When I Grow Up?

i'm almost 37 and I have felt the way you're feeling a number of times.

Do what excites you now. Don't worry about what path you're going down. There will just be another one somewhere down the road. Unless, of course you like cult-da-sacs.

I'd say it most depends on what will be fulfilling to you. If it's financial success and stability, it's probably safer to stay on the same path. Having said that, that doesn't seem quite so fulfilling to me either. One friend said to me, "Meh, stop bitching and just quit, you're smart, you'll find something else." I've come pretty close to taking that advise recently, but I'm waiting to get laid off so I can at least collect unemployment while I figure out what to do next. (Just hit 30 this year, so I feel your pain.)

Dear God, do I know EXACTLY how this feels. Most of the people I went to college with have "CAREERS" and have gotten their masters degrees and are teachers or have some path. I have a job that is really one step above Peter Gibbons's work at Initech. Problem is, I am stunningly unambitious and have no idea what I'd do if I didn't work here.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who is like "But I was told that by the time I turned 30 I'd be a functional adult!"
