I've heard good things about OpenSUSE and Fedora. They don't have Ubuntu's frequent update schedule, but that might be all to the good.

Thanks for the ideas, but I'm afraid I already tried 'em both... openSuSE and I don't get along thanks to their braindead YaST manager. Where Synaptic is easy, YaST is a fucking bitch and a half, and their support community ain't so good, either ( ... )
