lots and lots of practice.
I use psp to make all of my graphics and mood themes.
it's mostly trial and error and what looks good.

I don't have my own server, so I used yours...I hope that's ok? :)

I'm having a problem though! It all loaded perfectly, and when I go 'Modify Journal' it says 'Xander', and I select it. Only when I go back to my journal, it's still got my old mood theme up :( Any ideas why?

I could deff help you with a style I don't mind.
I could do one that is simular to thoughs.
I do ask for a small donation (ie a $5-$15 paid account) for the time.
it takes me anywhere from 4hours and up. it is very html orented.
let me know. and i can have it done within less then a week for you.
