i suck at sleeping so my advice might not work but i find an eyemask really helpful, not only for the darkness but also as a statement of intent.
i also like to listen to people talking about mildly amusing things to keep my mind from wandering into darker territories. a dvd commentary works well, or if they play bbc news overnight on your npr station. of course this has become an unbreakable habit for me, going strong since age 15, so beware.
trying to sleep when you know you have to get up is the worst. you can't even take an ambien.
