ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Chloe bit her lip, eyes glued to the woods. Dean had been gone too long. She was starting to worry.

"He's been gone a while," Andrew stated, inspecting the gun in his hand.

"I know, Andy," Chloe stated, not needing her son to tell her things she did not want to be hearing.

"I should have gone with him."

"He was just going to check it out," she said, trying to convince him. Trying to convince herself. "He'll be back soon."

Andrew sighed, leaning back against the leather seat of the Impala. Lips pursed in obvious dislike, he glanced out the window.

"Does Dad have his cell phone?" Holly asked, leaning forward to rest her arms on the seat behind Chloe. "Maybe he got lost..."

Chloe glanced back. Andrew was watching attentively. To be honest, she was ready to go looking, but she didn't want to leave the two of them by themselves. At seventeen and fourteen, though capable, she still was not ready to let them stay here on their own when they had no idea what might be lurking in the woods. Call it denial, but they were growing up much faster than she would have liked.

She sighed, as she reached for her cell phone. Chloe knew she was fighting a losing battle. With Andrew and Holly, she'd be outnumbered. Plus, the suggestion to call was not a bad idea.

Dialing in the number, Chloe held the phone to her ear and waited.

No answer. Nothing.

That's it.

She reached for the glove compartment, flipping it open, knowing Dean had stashed a Desert Eagle in there before he had left them at the side of the road.

"Stay in the-"

It was too late. Andrew was already out of the car in a flash, running without hesitation into the woods, gun loaded with silver bullets in hand. If Chloe's heart had been pounding before, it was nothing compared to the absolute dread seeping through her now. He should not be out there.

If it hadn't been for Holly, sitting in the backseat, Chloe would have been out there in a heartbeat.

"Mom?" Holly asked tentatively, eyes glued in the direction her brother had just run in. "Do you think we should -"

"No. We are staying in this car," Chloe snapped sternly.

"But-"

"Holly Marie Winchester, if your hand even touches the handle..."

This was supposed to be a vacation. Go for a drive, go see the sights. No hunting, no reporting, nothing. But she should have known better. Their lives never were easy. Something always came up. Dean swore he was just going to check out what had been stealing and mutilating tourists in the woods, get a little information, and come back with Sam later. She should have said no: put her foot down right then and there, but she knew he would not be able to enjoy the vacation if his he didn’t satisfy his curiosity.

“Can I -?” Holly began.

“In. The. Car,” Chloe repeated. “I don’t need you vanishing into the woods either.”

Holly sighed, looking back out the window. Silence invaded the car once more as Holly kept a sharp watch on the woods.

“I’m sorry for snapping,” she said, more gently than her earlier tone. “It’s just…”

“I get it. You’re worried.” Holly shrugged, leaning back in her seat.

“Well, you didn’t deserve it.”

Chloe began to drum her nails against the handle on the door; her eyes never leaving the woods.

“Mom?”

“Yeah, hun?”

“I know this isn’t the best time, but…Do we have to move to Chicago next year?” Holly asked, looking down at her hands.

Isn’t the best time? Her daughter had a way with understatements.

“Yes, we do,” Chloe stated, turning in her seat to look at Holly. “But, if you want, Aunt Lois said you could stay with her and Uncle Clark at the farm.”

“The farm?”

“You can hang out with Jonathan, ride the horses, and do your first year of high school in Smallville?”

Holly was silent a moment before looking back up. “It would only be a year, right?”

“Right.”

“And Andrew’s going with you guys?”

“That’s what he said.”

Holly bit her lip, eyes gazing towards the window. Chloe watched her for a moment, before she saw Holly’s eyes widen in surprise.

“Dad!” Holly shout, before she was out the door and headed towards the woods.

Chloe moved quickly, exiting the car just as Andrew came out of the woods, supporting Dean on his shoulder.

“Are you okay? What happened?” Holly asked quickly, talking a mile a minute. “What was it? Did you get it?”

Dean gave a tired laugh. “Relax, Monkey.”

She frowned, not receiving any answers, she changed gears. Holly went to the trunk of the Impala, unlocking it with the keys Andrew had tossed to her.

Chloe watched as Andrew and Dean approached, noticing the gash on Dean’s leg, and assuming that was the cause of his altered gait. She stepped out of the way of the open passenger’s side door, allowing Andrew to help Dean into the car.

“Hey, Chlo,” Dean grinned, sitting on the seat and looking at her innocently. “Was I gone that long?”

“Don’t even try it,” she said, shaking her head and kneeling down to take a closer look at the wound.

“No healing,” he said sternly, shying his leg away.

“Wasn’t planning on it,” Chloe responded, examining the wound. Wasn’t too deep, but it was long. Definitely would need a few stitches. “Can I say it?”

Dean sighed, rolling his eyes. “Go ahead.”

“I told you so.”

“Feel better?”

“I will once I get you to stop bleeding all over the car. Believe it or not, I’ve actually come to like this thing.”

Dean grinned, just as Holly came over with the first aid kit.

Chloe, not seeing Holly, continued: “Plus, the resale value of the car in better condition will pay for your funeral?”

“Dad’s gonna die?” Holly asked, eyes wide in horror.

“What - no, I…” Chloe began.

“Quit scaring the kid, Chlo. I’m sure Andrew’s already told her about Edward Scissorhands with Leatherface’s personality,” Dean said. “Don’t need to add my death to that list.”

“You people are so going to be paying my therapy bills! With you as a family, it’s a wonder I’m not more of a social freak!” Holly said, thrusting the first aid kit into her mother’s hands before walking around to the other side of the car to sulk.

Andrew, creeping up to her side, jumped out at her, causing Holly to shriek. Fuming, she chased after him in the deserted road in the woods, shouting things about unloading a clip into his precious Mustang.

“Family vacation, huh?” Chloe asked.

“Feels like we never left home.”
