DA Disconnection

deviantART is entirely banned from the public library system of Savannah, which is somewhat understandable (nudity of many sorts) but inconvenient. I will probably have access through friends, at times, but I haven't logged on since my move ( Read more... )

Well yes we MUST ban evil influences like DA, mustn't we? What else is banned? Chaucer? Dickens? Plato? Do they have any books on art? Better tear out the pages of Ruebens! Cover up the Venus de Milo! Smut! It's all smut!

Although I'd admit that a lot of what appears on DA's front page as "artistic nude" to my mind should be classified as "soft porn" or "Ha! Ha! Look at the naked girl!" (There are actually 3 nudes in my favourites, but then I don't go looking for them. 3 nudes, 3 thousand sunsets, 3 million rusty cars ....)

C'est moi! René

Well said, of course ;) but in all seriousness it's a very unfortunate reality, due to DA's great cultural value. It's occured to me to possibly argue that they should only ban the galleries directly associated with nudity and perversion... still, the Daily Deviations could be a problem. I forget-- do they still show any nude DDs (or nudity in general) if you're NOT logged in...?? Could you check this for me? (Since I literally can't.)

If DA does not allow any such nudity if you're not logged in, I am very inclined to make a serious argument to the head of the library system here. I consider this a significant opportunity.

Perhaps a significant opportunity to be banned from the library? :)
I have looked, as per your request, and when not logged in you don't see anything that's been properly labeled as having adult content - just a blank little gray box.
Perhaps the public library is worried about kiddies staring over shoulders, false ID log-ins, and/or people leaving pages logged in or in cache. Pretty extreme concerns when you see what shows up on daytime broadcast or everyday news stands. It's not like DA is really deviant; it's just a name. Maybe THAT's the whole problem. Change the name of the site to Delightful Art! :)
