On Her Majesty's Secret Service was a transition movie...and was in some ways expected to be the end of Bond...but it didn't die. The producers also knew they needed someone that could stand up to Sean Connery, very tough shoes to fill, and they knew Lazenby wasn't the man for the job.
Like I said, it's not all Timothy Daulton's fault. It was a gravy train for him, but he'd been better off to just walk away from it after the 1st movie flopped.
