CHARACTER NAME: Nanoha Takamachi
SERIES: Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha
CANON POINT: Immediately before her introduction in Force.
AGE: 25
APPEARANCE:

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A.

PERSONALITY: A major theme in every part of the Nanoha franchise is “loneliness”; Nanoha has always been both an example of and a solution to loneliness. As a child, she was a perpetual “third wheel”: her family consisted of her mother and father, and her brother and sister; the former two behaved like newlyweds despite being well into their marriage and the latter two were basically the same in age, over a half decade older than Nanoha, and were best friends. Even Nanoha’s two friends were closer with one-another than either were with her.

So, for nine years of being a third- or fifth-wheel amongst both friends and family, coupled with a lack of goals-unlike all other children her age, she had no dreams or ideas or goals of what she wanted to be when growing up and, despite being excellent in school, found it empty-left her lonely. Despite both her loneliness and lacking goals having been lone eradicated by the time she became an adult, it still formed the basis of her personality, morals, and beliefs as an adult. She is able and well more than willing to identify, sympathize, and empathize with loneliness in others; in every instance and in every conflict (well, save for those of the strict military nature), she does all she can to understand the other person, even if it means endangering herself.

She does also understand that sometimes to get those that are so lonely that they are endangering themselves and others-Fate risking her life and doing things she regretted, the Wolkenritter committing crimes they would rather not do, Teana risking her and Subaru’s lives for no reason during a simple training exercise, Vivio in a state of rage and panic-to listen and open up requires force, whether it be a severe punishment (in Teana’s case) or a no-holds-barred beatdown (in everyone else’s case); this is summarized in her catchphrase “listen or be shot” and the memetic phrase “befriending”, which has come to refer to Nanoha’s ability to make people open up and become her friend by beating the crap out of them first.

Unlike most other magical girls, who often regret acquiring their powers and hate fighting, Nanoha has never once regretted becoming a magical girl and, as soon as she acquired her powers, it became her new motivating goal in life; as for fighting, Nanoha is a maniac and, despite her sweet and kind demeanor, has a raging love for fighting that would leave any testosterone-fueled gladiator humbled. She loves her job (although she has retired for the most part to concentrate on raising her daughter), loves her powers, and loves fighting.

The two people most important to her that have had the most impact on her life and personality would be Fate Testarossa-Harlaown and Vivio. The former she met as a child and has been her best friend ever since; the friendship began with Nanoha…frankly, becoming smitten with the girl despite their first meeting involving getting the snot kicked out of her. Despite the beatdown, Nanoha was able to tell immediately that the girl was lonely and in emotional pain, often making her monologue about Fate’s, quote, “sad, beautiful eyes” and made it her goal to befriend the blonde girl. Once Nanoha defeated the blonde girl and were able to talk, she became absolutely attached immediately, no longer being a third/fifth wheel to anyone. The two girls have been and still are essentially attached to the hip ever since; at some point during their late teenage life, they began sharing a house. Also a bed. Also a child. Also the shower.

Oh, right, while the series has made hiding it an artform, Nanoha and Fate are essentially married; like with many military romances where one is gone for long periods of time (in this case, Fate on missions around the universe), they are more-or-less perpetually engaged. The women’s voice actors, the creator of the series, and the writer of the series (who has written unofficial stories and comics stressing the marriage-like and romantic aspects of their relationships) all have said they see the two as a couple. This is important to note to show the extent to which Fate is one of the two most important people in the universe to Nanoha.

The other most important person in the universe is their adopted daughter, Vivio; Nanoha has since essentially dedicated her life from being a military instructor, soldier, and weapons tester to being a full-time mother. Considering how important the former was to her all her life (she trained EVERY DAY since she was nine to strengthen her magic and become a better fighter), her willingly letting go of it to dedicate herself to the child says more about her than I can with words.

And as a sort of culmination of her hatred of loneliness, her strength in battle, and her love for her friends and family, the final aspect of Nanoha requiring mentioning is her dedication to protecting her loved ones. For example, she shot a criminal through a Star Destroyer-sized ship despite said criminal having nowhere to run; she did this-and excessively, I may add-because said criminal harmed Vivio. Nanoha will crush with extreme prejudice anyone that harms her loved ones, especially her child. She is a mother bear with an itchy trigger finger, a strong belief in punishment, and a lot of rage under a very pretty face.
