I'm being very, very calm. You want to be aware of that.

Today has been a day of serious deadline woe, mainly because one of our press contacts didn't send us the pictures he was supposed to since he is famously and utterly useless. And despite me ringing up the pictures department many times, we still went to press nearly two hours late. There's very little that's more frustrating than being hamstrung ( Read more... )

When people at parties asked what you did for a living, you could proudly tell them, "I'm in the porn industry!"

Salient points re: Dr. Who. I'm still not sure of all of these 'arc' things. In my day, Doctor Who never had story arcs (except for two seasons). It seems odd that it does. It seems more odd when they are shoe-horned in. RTD is a good care-taker for the series, but a bad writer.

Well, If I get the job I was interviewed for last week - *crosses fingers* - I'll be able to tell people that "I'm a sub!"

And no, they didn't, but they didn't have self-contained episodes either. There has to be something like a goal to achieve or an enemy to defeat to tie them together somehow - it's far more satisfying to have the series build up to something than just be a series of one-off snapshots from their adventures.
But I want it to be far more spectacular and skillfully deployed than it seems like we could be getting. I really enjoyed the Bad Wolf build-up, both looking out for the reference each week and the anticipation of the episode itself. It's obviously far too early to pass final judgment on this series' arc yet, but I'm unconvinced so far. Russell may not be able to do better, but he can certainly employ people who can. I'm really hoping there's going to be some sort of unexpected development or twist.

I know. The one-off nature of the adventures does tend to bug. That's why I've quite enjoyed the two-parters, although the second episode invariably offers nothing new apart from a 'winding up' of the previous week's tale. Oh, I did like my Dr. Who in episodic form!

I too wish that RTD would employ more people to write. He shouldn't take it all on himself, although Tooth and Claw was very good...

Tell you what though, I've got high hopes for School Reunion. I think it's going to be good.

Pertwee's 'Spearhead From Space' comes damn close, though!

I haven't seen Silurians since I was a young teenager watching UK Gold. It dragged. A lot. I did enjoy the book, though :) I think Spearhead is a fine introduction to the series, and used it when I converted my last pet-experiment.

I was never impressed by Ambassadors, though (I felt that it was too dragged out), and I don't really rate Inferno as highly as everyone else. I should probably give Season 7 another go at some point, but it involves losing a couple of evenings!
