The only way to get a new family is to marry into one, or make one. I've found the first option to be rather hit-and-miss. At least you have a little control over the second.
I know. That's why I'm about 240 miles away from my family, in a much larger city. My friends have become my family, it works a lot better. Plus I can add and take away as I see fit. :) Also, shortly after I posted this, I heard someone make the comment that people like me need to learn to become independant so that we don't feel like we need this support. I've been thinking about that one for a while now.
I think 'being independent' is over-rated and often a euphemism for 'being self-absorbed, desensitised to romantic and/or familial love and incapable of compromise'. Not a great long-term life tactic.
From what I've read on your blog you're at optimum independence right now. If you're yearning for a closer family then that just proves your brain is working correctly. If you were living a few hundred years ago you'd have had at least 4 kids by your age and about 15 neices and nephews.
