He’d been gone off world for more than a month working with one of their newest acquaintances when he walked into the commissary for lunch. He glanced casually over the crowded tables and thought that the schedules must have changed a lot in the while that’s he’s been gone because there were more people in the hard plastic chairs surrounding the formed tables. Still, it was nice to see humans again.

Not that the people he’d spent the last twenty-eight days, fifteen hours and fourty-two minutes with hadn’t looked human… but their food!

He’d sent more than one e-mail to Elizabeth regarding the horrible fare and she’d ignored everything about it.

He was about to grab a random chair when he caught sight of a blonde head near the window. The plates on his tray slipped and nearly fell off before he caught himself and righted it, glancing around to see if anyone had caught his fumble. Mercifully unobserved, Rodney tried to move through the crowd and pretended to spot her at the last minute.

“Kate!” he feigned surprise.

She glanced up, truly surprised and frowns slightly. “Dr. McKay.”

“Rodney, please,” he said, placing his tray across from hers and slipping into the chair. He ignored her slightly put upon expression - or didn't understand it - and dug into his meatloaf.

She sighed and smiled instead, watching him for a moment before continuing her own meal in silence. In all truth, he looked at her out of the corner of his eyes until he saw her dip to her plate again. Once he found that her attention was elsewhere he took a second to gather her in.

It had been much too long since he had seen her, finding most of his time encrusted in scientific research and off-world missions. Routine had fallen into a deep rut that he couldn't seem to break himself out of.

Now though, just having come back from the other planet and still waiting to have time to read the reports on research done while he was gone, he found an unusual amount of time to spend on... himself. And if he was completely honest with himself, spending some time in Kate Heightmeyer's presence seemed to be just as enthralling as that of Samantha Carter's.

And here, even in the crowded, unmannered masses of the expeditions people, he seemed to think that she was more at herself then whenever he saw her anywhere near her office. Why was it that she seemed lighter, unburdened by the pressures that everyone elses problems weighed down on her slender shoulders?

She glanced up at him suddenly and, fighting a blush that he knew was going to stain his cheeks, dug into his food with relish.

They played a game of who was watching who for a short while and then, gathering some courage that he wasn't sure that had, cleared his throat. Thinking that he could maybe break the ice and find something in his psyche that he'd been missing since being turned down by Harriet Yanley in freshman year, he finally asked her a question.
